I have just finished
watching the 2016 January / February run of Celebrity Big Brother, and, must
admit to feeling a little deflated. Scotty
T, the winner, although he has come across as a reasonable lad in the house,
does not qualify in my opinion to being crowned the winner. However much you may dress it up, he has
effectively just coasted under the radar to the winning post, using the massive
fan base he has accumulated through his other television appearances. I don’t know why this surprises me so much as
this has been a feature of the Big Brother process for a number of years. My mate was so incensed with Scotty T
winning, he declared he was not going to watch the live final programme! Just for clarity we were out at the time of
the live broadcast, as it was Friday night after all!
I myself did watch the
recorded final, albeit strategically fast forwarding through many parts (the
beauty of sky plus). What struck me was
the monotony of the interviewing process.
Emma Willis should really call it a day, or, at least subject herself to
going in to the house. We constantly
hear about the pressure cooker environment, the world within a world, etc
dirge. I mean we know about all this by
now. Also all of the answers to the
interview questions, we had heard already.
How many times have I heard how upset Darren Day was with John
Partridge? Well a lot I can tell
you. It may be that being an avid fan I
have overdosed on the programme, having watched the main show, bit on the side,
and, the live broadcasts. I personally
needed some new questions, but as ever all of the hard hitting subjects were
basically avoided. Why didn’t Emma ask
about Scotty T’s 400 sexual conquests; if he had ever had a sexually
transmitted disease; what he felt about the emotional distress these one night
stands might inflict? After all his
sexual activity was one of his main talking points in the house. How many times did we hear the phrase, “Scotty
T’s job is to shag women”. This phrase
has never been questioned once; it has just been accepted by both presenters
and housemates. How do you square with
what Scotty T gets up to, and, Stephanie Davis’s longing to have a normal
relationship? How can Stephanie hope to
settle down, when all boys look up to what Scotty T gets up to, and, see it as
the way to behave? None of this subject
matter was broached at all in any interviews that took place.
Perhaps I am just looking
too deeply at it all, when in essence the fact of the matter is it is just a light
entertainment game show. Most of the
arguing that occurs is stirred up by the shows producers. At one time of day whatever was spoken about
in the diary room, remained in the diary room.
Nowadays it is broadcast to the entire house to cause conflict. Nowhere is safe in the Big Brother house.
So in conclusion I am going
to have to think carefully whether to continue to watch future series of Big
Brother. I mean I have committed a lot
of time to it, but is it productive, when at the end I become as disillusioned,
and disappointed as I have done? Has the
way the show is now produced led to my disenfranchisement?
Just to end on a positive
note, I have got to give great credit to Rylan Clarke-Neal, his presenting of
the Bit on the Side programme, he has just got better and better. My highlight of the whole series was the
montage of the Bit on the Side best bits.
Pure genius.
