I’ve
just had two calls from the Microsoft Technical Support department within ten
minutes. Of course these are not the
real Microsoft, they are scammers. It is
bank holiday Monday today, so I suppose they must be out in force to try and
catch as many people as they can who are at home. I wonder how much they will earn from this
fraud today?
It
does surprise me that in this day and age we do not seem to be able to control
this sort of activity. If I am totally
honest I do not even know who I should be reporting this kind of activity to,
if anyone? When I pressed 1471 the following
number 0800 0885073, was identified to be the caller. Surely if we have this number it would not be
too much to ask for the phone companies, and, authorities to take action and
block the number. Also why is it not
possible during a call that you think is suspicious to be able to press keys on
your telephone keypad to report it mid call?
The
caller who phoned me said that she was based in Cape Town, but would not give
me an address. Even though I ended the
call, it still leaves me with a nasty taste in my mouth. There is always some paranoia at the back of
your mind that they could have done something while they were on the phone.
This
is just another reason really for giving up technology! It would be one less thing to worry
about. I also worry for other people who
may be drawn in to the scam, especially the older generation. Just to end on a lighter note, I always remember
my mother (over the age of 80, without a computer in sight) taking a call, and,
afterwards telling me it was from Microsoft Windows. She said she couldn’t hear exactly what was
being said, but that she already had double glazing, and, wasn’t interested in
any more!
